GOING GAGA!

Still recovering from my energy-filled experience with Lady Gaga, who is now my newest object of LUST. A great performer who always commands attention with her audience (she got mine with her almost nude costumes, which I bet only takes 2-3 seconds to change). She sang only 10 songs from her debut album (she didn’t sing Again, Again, Summer Boys and I Like It Rough) so I guess it wasn’t worth the 3 hours wait for only an hour of a show (plus 30 mins opening act by Pedicab; great moves from Raymund though, Cool Songs too!). What made it special was the “GAGA Production Numbers” (and costumes, or lack thereof, hehehe!). There’s the mini movie presentation and a rocking band to fill in some breaks; there’s the bubble filled piano which in itself is very entertainingly cool; and don’t get me started on her uncensored remarks (like when she told everybody about being asked if she , Lady Gaga, had a ‘dick,’ to which she answered a resounding YES; or her ‘orgasmic’ adlibs in between songs… oh, oh, oh OooH!). Oh! and how can I forget the moment when she went crazy playing the bubble filled piano…SPREAD EAGLED! WOOHOO! Talk about Po, Po, Po, Poke…..r Face, hehehe! She sings and dances live, which is unbelieveable given that most of her songs are up-tempo,  I’m still in awe of where she gets the energy from. I guess it’s from us, the audience, who all shouted, sang, cheered and danced throughout the concert (am still recovering from hoarseness after the show…or should I say a big hour-long PARTY!). Definitely, an unforgettable GaGa experience…

YO!!! JOE!!!

Just wanted to say the New G.I. Joe Movie: The Rise Of Cobra was a BIG BLAST!!!

Loved IT! Great Update of the old 80’s Cartoons (and Toys) I grew up with.

“KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE”

CGIs were out of this world; also loved their use of flashbacks to present sub-plots and stories. The essential characters were present and made the movie a vital watch for G.I. Joe fans, old and new alike…

A non-fan may also appreciate the movie since the story was well presented and the basic storyline was both entertaining and close to the original with some minor tweeks here and there. A not-to-be-missed piece of the past for any true blooded 80’s brainchild and TV fanatic (or geek like me).

“WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, THEY DON’T”

“YO!!! JOE!!!”

BRAVED THE RAINS FOR HARRY

Just saw the New Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince Movie Today! WOOHOO!

Been excited for the past week and Here’s the Verdict…

Loved that it was Story-Driven (much like the book);

Loved the Funny side of things (especially Professor Slughorn and Ron & Lavender, Hilarious!);

Loved that it was Light and Entertaining (didn’t mind that it was almost 3 hours long!), but Very Realistic (Effective acting jobs);

Loved the Magic! (Special Effects, I mean);

BUT…

Hated their omission of significant story lines (like “Why was Snapes called The Half Blood Prince?” DUH! It’s part of the Title of the Movie!);

Hated the Lack of Action-Packed Scenes like Wand Fights, Duels …and Alien Robots (Oh! That’s another  movie)

Hated… uuuh, Hated… Hated the… ah, well, I can’t think of any other reason, really…

4 against 2, Not Bad, I guess…

I’d rate it an 8 out of 10 for Entertainment Value (10 being the Highest Score; as in Eyes & Ears Glued to the Screen), kasi last full show na pero hindi ako inantok, YEHEY!

But only a 6 out of 10 for Over-All Film Greatness (10 being the Highest, Meaning Oscar Worthy; or to my opinion ka-Level ng The Matrix Series, hehehe!)

Expectations were Great I guess, So I blame myself for being a bit disappointed. It hasn’t beaten the 1st movie (Sorcerer’s Stone) as to the transfer of Harry Potter’s Magic from Book to the Big Screen. So far the first film is the best (for me) in capturing the essence and wonder of the world of Harry Potter. But the Half Blood Prince is a Great Watch nonetheless…Really entertaining. (with British accent on REALLY…)

Well, Blimey! What do I know? I’m biased! I love the HP series ;p (again, with British accent…)

95) RAVAGE…which they turned (I mean upgraded) from a Black Dog to a One-Eyed Jaguar (I miss Laser Beak though)

94) I lapped it all up when BUMBLEBEE put on his Fighting Form (complete with Mask) in one scene then skinned little old Ravage ALIVE! (in another)

93) Don’t even get me started on THE CONSTRUCTICONS…OH! That Really Really Made My Jaws Drop!

These are just few of the reasons why I loved the movie…It really brought back a lot of memories with me watching the Takara Version on Channel 13 or Is it Channel 9? Or 5? I’m not sure; Dami kasi Re-Runs e. It seems eons ago, but the movie made it feel like it was yesterday.

I AM NOT A FAN

I AM NOT A FAN… I was never enthralled with a particular artist, musician, or band. I was never the first to answer out the question; ”Who is your Favorite Singer or Group of All Time?” I never got hooked on a specific genre of music, nor was I one of the confident few to buy clothes inspired by top celebrities like red leather jackets or arm bands. I was never vocal about being inspired by famous people with tag names like the Queen OR King of Pop. But why shed a tear on hearing of the latest tragedy to befall the world that I grew up with and have become so fond of, the World of Music? Why be saddened by the passing of “The Gloved One?”

It has always been ‘The MUSIC’ for me…the lyrics…the melodies…the harmonies. Others call me ‘Eclectic,’ but I still don’t know what they mean. I have always taken a liking to songs that sounded great; songs that I instantaneously knew the words to after hearing it about 2 to 3 times on the radio or any music player, and by this, I mean ANY music player, since I grew up on turntables, the radio and cassette players. My Father has always been a big musical influence. He made my brother and I listen to different types of artists and their respective genres of music. My parents often reminded us of how they’d play music during my mother’s pregnancy because they believed it’d make their babies smart (which I thought was a ridiculous idea), not realizing that even in the womb we started to appreciate this form of art. So it was inevitable that when we came out, we had a definite affinity for classic songs of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s; songs by Frank Sinatra and others from The Rat Pack, Matt Monro, Doris Day and Petula Clark; to groups like The Lettermen, The Everly Brothers, Spiral Staircase and a little band called The Beatles. These artists were already famous way before our time. So how come I developed this certain connection with them? I guess their music, for me, not only sounded good and fun to sing to, but also their songs I have come to equate with the quaint yet significant memories I have garnered throughout life. Being born and growing up in the 80’s, I could remember listening to songs from The BeeGees’ Saturday Night Live album with my father’s big headphones on, which would dangle around since it was bigger than my head and the big muffs completely engulfed my small ears making the musical experience even better because of the ‘Full-Surround’ sound experience which I have had the pleasure of early on, way before Dolby sound was created. At times, I’d recall playing an LP album of The Carpenters while doing homework; or singing to a Multiplex of Natalie Cole while tending to our old ‘sari-sari’ store (which eventually closed because we kept eating the displayed chips and soft drinks).Even holidays were more unforgettable, like the time when I remember helping an aunt wrap gifts while the Jackson 5’s Christmas Album was playing in the other room. At school, fondest memories include singing ‘Give Love on Christmas Day’ until our lungs gave out in Music Class almost always each year, until Jose Mari Chan’s ‘Christmas In Our Hearts’ came out, took over, and replaced a new soundtrack to an old torment. I recall caroling with friends singing ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’ then receiving more money than on nights when we would sing ‘Sa May Bahay, Ang Aming Bati…”There was Song or Dance Presentations to the tune of ‘Beat It’ on occasions like the school’s Foundation Day, or performing ‘Billie Jean’ during a completely unrelated observation of ‘Linggo ng Wika.’ I also I remember singing ‘We Are The World’ and ‘Heal The World‘ with a group in one of the United Nations Day celebration with a make-out globe dropping from the top of the stage, made out of a huge spherical styropore wrapped in blue and green crepe paper, which we hurriedly made just minutes before the performance. And as if that’s not enough. I come home to my father playing video collections and concerts of his favorites such as various Motown artists on our Betamax (then later on our VHS player). I vividly remember coming home one afternoon after classes with some of my uncles making fun of my uniform khaki pants which I have outgrown, with the white socks showing; they’re teasing me and shouting ‘Idol mo ba si Michael Jackson?’ But recall laughing back a them since they were the ones watching the ‘Thriller’ video, with 2 of them even getting up to recreate the dance moves (with me unconsciously remembering the steps during the short, ‘scary’ but infamous instrumental bit). I also recall kidding with one of my aunts, us dancing to ‘Beat It’ following a group of dancers while watching a famous noontime show, all this during her 3rd trimester of pregnancy, closely on the verge of giving birth anytime during the whole routine. These memories have given me a sense of appreciation for my childhood. They make me look back and realize I was capable of such fun, such emotions, that I can feel and be happy or be sad; they made me feel very human, someone who’s amassed all these experiences. These memories fill up my so-called life, and what a full life it has been so far.

My father has been gone now for 5 years but the Music still plays on. And today I woke up somber and feeling very cold even though the sun was shining outside, feeling like something was a miss. I didn’t know what it was until I turned the radio on expecting to be cheered up by Chico and Delamar but instead hearing them announce Michael Jackson was dead at 50 years old, and his song ’Gone Too Soon’ was played thereafter. I WAS NEVER A MICHAEL JACKSON FAN. I never bought nor have owned any of his albums. I remember not having it in me the eagerness to even try to save enough for a ticket to see him when he flew in the country for his world tour in 1996. I even remember having a conversation with friends telling them I believed he was guilty of pedophilia as a result of his deprived childhood, because he shot to fame quite early on in his life. But then again, when I hear his music I reminisce and remember him singing ‘I Want You Back’ with his brothers in an old Motown Special while being scolded by one of my strict aunts because of my ‘kakulitan;’ I remember copying his dance moves from ‘Thriller’ with my brother in our blue-carpeted ‘sala’ with my parents laughing (or were they mocking us?), and I can still recall watching him with my father, already ridden with Stroke, while he performs his signature Moonwalk during a Tribute to him on Cable TV, just a few months before my dad died. These are not just memories. They are pieces of my childhood, my family, my life. They ultimately make up parts of who I am, and losing him somehow made me feel a cumulatively great void, that only he and his music’s legacy can fill. His influence not only defined certain points along my timeline as I have now come to reminisce with these memories, but also his music defined a decade, NO! a generation of people both old and young. And now that I’m all grown up and have come to develop my own taste of music, I still don’t have any of his albums (except for an original LP of his ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ album passed on from my father, which I think will become a very valuable memorabilia in the near future), but why do I have all his songs in my IPod? Because these songs serve as memories, memories that are forever etched in my mind and have become a part of my so-called life, the life of a MUSIC FAN, Music which won’t be complete and won’t be as we know it today without the influence of the man so-called the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

Ice Cream…Anybody?!

Saying Grace In A Restaurant

Last week, I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank
you
for
the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream
for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!”

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard
a woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t
even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!”

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and
God
was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, “I happen to know that God thought
that was a great prayer.”

“Really?” my son asked.
“Cross my heart,” the man replied.
Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose
remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asked God
for ice
cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.”

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My
son
stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the
rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it
in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is
for
you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good
already.”

The End

I love this story!
Sometimes, we all need some ice cream.
I hope God sends you some Ice Cream today!

WEAR SUNSCREEN…

Everybody’s Free - Baz Luhrmann (Was an article published in the Chicago Tribune on June 1, 1997 by columnist Mary Schmich)

Rain_1Wear sunscreen
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine.Puppy

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you

Sing

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours.Dance

Floss

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with yourSmile
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll everTech
own..

Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

(Brother and sister together we’ll make it through
Someday your spirit will take you and guide you there
I know you’ve been hurting, and I know I’ve been waiting to be there
for you. And I’ll be there, just tell me now, whenever I can.
Everybody’s free.)Train

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in

Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Trees

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you’re 40, it will
look 85.
Sun
Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen…

Do you remember the 80’s?

“You better watch out, you better not cry, you
better not pout I’m telling
you why, Santa Claus is…” dead.
Not literally of course, tumatanda lang talaga
tayo.  We no longer believe
in Santa!  (Baka meron pa dyan ha, sinasabi ko
na.  If you saw your mommy
kissing Santa Claus, alisin mo yung hat at balbas,
at mukha ng tatay mo ang
bubulaga sayo! O kung tito mo man yon, wawang
polkadots. Itali sa dulo ng
isang wooden stick at ipatong sa balikat!  Voila!
ready ka nang lumayas!)

O teka, lumalayo na tayo sa usapan.  Tumatanda
ka na!  Lesbiana na ang
favorite na childstar mo at ang crush mo sa That’s
ay mommy na sa mga
shows.
only oldies na walang
kulubot!  Let’s have a blast from the past, back to
when we were called
na, uwian na” to the tune of
Here comes the Bride!

Mapunta muna tayo sa Pagkain…  Yung Chizels
and Chikadees na may freebies
inside,  superfriends cards and playmoney etc… Si
kalbong Ziggy na walang
pang-ibabang saplot ay free pa sa Tang.  Kadiri!…
Yung Haw flakes na bago
mo isubo, bubulong ka pa ng “the body of Christ”
at ikaw rin ang sasagot ng
“amen”…
Curls, Nuts n’ Pops and
Munchies?…  Yung popsicle na yellow sa taas at
orange sa baba, ano nga
bang tawag don? up and down nga ba?… Ang
lollipop na dini-dip sa powder?
E yung Royco chicken noodle soup na hinahain
pag may lagnat tayo.  Gumawa
At yung
katangi-tanging may panukat

Lets go to the TV shows… Student Canteen (na
pingangungunahan nina Malou
Maglutac at Chiqui Hallman) John n’ Marsha, 2+2,
See True, Champoy,
Cafeteria Aroma, Manok ni San Pedro, Joey and
Son?
Hapi
house with our favorite Chuckie Dreyfus boy and
the Granada girl na may !
Ana Liza at Flor de Luna… Sa paglipat mo naman
ng TV at may nakita kang
taong nakapaloob sa oblong sa may lower left
corner ng TV, deep in your
Siyempre
sasabihin oo kahit hindi,
iniiwasang mapahiya ka sa telebisyon no!  Dito rin
sapilitang isinisingit
naka A-team, Miami Vice, Knight
Rider, Price is Right, Family Feud at $25,000
Pyramid…
may He-man (binabangungot ka
magkatuluyan sila ni He-Man
ayun pala’y mag-ate!), GI Joe, Transformers,
Smurfs, Fragile Rock, Great
Space Coaster at Shirt Tails!
konsyensya at ang Kulot to the
roots na hairdo ni Ate Siena (I bet naka-rebond
na ‘to ngayon)!
“alagang-alaga namin si Puti, bakang mataba
bakang maputi!”.  Aminin nyo na
nakapanood din kayo kahit sabihin nyo pang
laking Sesame Street kayo!
nagkatuluyan!
nyang inaatupag!)… Eto
for sure naalala nyo, That’s Entertainment!
Brought to you by Berds tree
milk powder (ika nga ni Kuya Germs!), with 17
vitamins minerals and
lecithin!  Well, makakalimutan mo ba ang
pinagmulan nina Romnick (in his
tight macho shirt and rolled sleeves) and Manolet
Ripol?  Napinagtangkaan

magkakapatid na Lapid (Si Rex, Jess o the very
long before naisip nyang
ayaw nya ng madumi?  At kung gaano ka pangit
ng ichura ni Snooky sa Blusang
Itim? Tulad ni Skeletor, kabangu-bangungot!

Commercials naman tayo… Alala nyo pa ba si
Eric Baines ,the “Colgate Man”
E yng Crest
toothpaste na may
pasuntok-suntok pa sa palad?  Siguro hindi, pero
ang Pepsodent malamang
maalala nyo kasi lasang bebelgam!…  E ang
pinong panlaba na gentle on
hands — Ola! Nga pala, napansin nyo bang wala na
ang Superwheel?  Ha!
mong mabagok ang only thing
that’s holding you back from doing so… Ang RA
Homevision — “zero in and
rent your favorite videocasette tapes blah-blah”,
kundi pa nagpakita ng
clip from Smurf ay di nyo papansinin ang
commercial na ito. To the
pansamantalang family
business ka lang. Buti pa ang ang Arthurs Legaspi
Towers in Taft Avenue
made-to-order pants and barong finished within 6
hours? (perfect sa mga
napikot!)… C.Y. Gabriel Wonder ang sabon ng
mga artista?  Ows, meaning to
say yon ang sabon ni Ate Vi and Ate Shawie? I
really (100X) don’t think
so…  E ang 680 Home appliances na may mag-
asawang unano sa ilalim ng
kahon sabay kanta ng “why don’t you shop around
with a friend?”  Teka Rod,
sisingilin mo pa yang mga kinahon mo… Ang
Sheraton bed na may elepante
pang kinonchaba para sumirko-sirko sa kuchon!
So elepante sa kuchon…
kuchon nasa loob ng bedroom… hmmm… mabuti
na nga yung handa!… Siempre
Factory who made us believe
na may flowing stream of chocolate doon. Nagfield
trip pa kami don, Dyosme!
Puro gray na makina lang talaga! as in pabrikang-
pabrika! Mga nagoyo ng
Goya!…  PG 18 naman — pag may babae naka
bikining pula at nakasakay pa
sa puting kabayo at heto’t umaalog alog sa screen
alam nyo na kung anong ad
yon — Red horse? Di rin.  Ano pa kundi White
Castle Whisky, na di na
naubusan ng starlets na isasakay sa kabayo!…
Speaking of starlets, ang
Technogas commercials na pinagbibidahan ng
mga kamag-anak ng direktor o
kung malaki-laki ang budget, itong mga starlets
nga ang bida! “Look for a
Star!”.  Talaga lang ha, asan?… Well kung nag-

Unahin natin siyempre sa “I
remember yesterday, the world was so young … Is
that you Lolo.  Look at
my mole!”
Maynila! Mga stirero talaga! parang Goya…
eto, “. ..laro at trabaho at
all day fun you need sunglo juice drinks, dancing
at the party, picnic at
the park, sunglow juice drinks, sunglo juice drinks”
na akala ng lahat ay
si Rey-An Fuentes (magkasingkulot pero hindi
talaga sya yon) ok sige, baka
ako lang nakakaalala non…  eto, “i’m gonna knock
on your door, ring on
your bell, tap on your window too… blah-blah-
blah… i’m you’re friend
the Electrolux man.
ding loss — as if!…  Ah
eto, I’m sure alam ng lahat ng Pilipino ito by
heart!…ang walang kupas
na… “Seiko seiko wallet, ang wallet na
__________, balat nito ay
_________, international pa ang mga__________,”
O di ba na fill up nyo yung
blanks!

ballerina slash cow, and
not the other way around!), Miko (yung naka shorts
at naka milkshake hat,
as if naman may milkshake sa Jollibee!), Mr. Yum
(Si Miko lang ‘to na
naka-Amerikana, pa-mature ba), Popo (si Miko
din ‘to na may fries sa
bunbunan) at Hetty Spaghetti (si Miko pa rin to,
pag gabi) para kalabanin
ang sosyalin na Amboys na sina Ronald,
Hamburglar, Birdie (hindi yung
naiisip mo! ibon talaga sya) at Grimace (may ube
pala sa McDo?)!  At
without friends in
contrast to Mighty Kid who has got new friends!  Di
ka in kung hindi Mighty
Kid ang rubbershoes mo!… Mawawala ba naman
sa parties si Howie, ang
mala-ulap na mascot ng Magnolia? Well sana nga,
nang dahil sa kanya
nagkaphobia ako sa Cumulus clouds at mga
mascots!
(bisayang Gino),  at sina Es and
Em — the pride of SM na nachismis pang si Henry
Sy daw ang nasa loob ni
Es o baka naman ni Em? Hmmm… E si Tanya at
ang Rainbow Riders ng Rustan’s
kilala nyo?

Coca-cola, Royal, Sprite designs at may
exhibitions pa gaya ng Wallking the
Dog at Rock-a-bye baby!  O kaya naman ang mga
BMX bikes na may pa-uso pang
rampa at wheelie!… Ang Game n’ Watch na
Mickey Mouse, Popeye, at Donkey
yung naiisip mo, as in with
stem, petals, hinahabol ng bee—the works!)?  Ang
up-down, up-down,
Left-right, left-right, select, start para magka extra
life sa Contra (Kay
macho-macho sa barilan pero kung mapatay
naman ay naka usli ang isang
binti!)…
batang bading…  Ang mommy
mo ay naka perm pa non na tila ba’y tatagal ng
isang dekada with matching

yon!
